If you do not subscribe to the Final Fantasy XIV newsletter, you may have missed an important message that was posted today. Specifically that Square Enix is aware that FFXIV has been a failure so far and they are doing what they can to do fix it. Here is a quote from that message:

While more than two months have passed since the official launch of FINAL FANTASY XIV service, we deeply regret that the game has yet to achieve the level of enjoyability that FINAL FANTASY fans have come to expect from the franchise, and for this we offer our sincerest of apologies.

Some of the big pieces of news from this:

Change in leadership: The producer/director for the game has changed, along with other key roles.
Free trial period (free to play) has been extended until they have a clear plan of attack to fix the game.
PS3 version has been delayed beyond March 2011, no date given.
The December updates previously announced for FFXIV will still be released as announced.
